Abstract

Immigration has become a significant topic of discussion in recent times in the United States (US) and worldwide. The increasing population of immigrants in the US has also been accompanied by a rise in the population of children from immigrant families pursuing higher education in colleges all over the US. In addition to children from immigrant families in the US, other international students from all over the world migrate to the US for their higher education. Research has shown, however, that immigrant students are more likely to experience various mental health challenges due to their unique situation, including acculturation stress, discrimination, language barriers, and financial difficulties. This systematic literature review explores whether immigration status affects the mental health of immigrants and international college students. It also answers if resources available for these students improve their academic performances and general well-being in college. The findings highlight how immigration status could expose students to various mental health challenges in college and the need for comprehensive, culturally sensitive policies and programs to address the mental health needs of immigrants and international students, promoting their well-being and fostering inclusive communities in the United States.
